January 2026 Quarterly Volunteer Newsletter

By Dana Shapiro • Community and Volunteer Engagement Manager

By now you have probably heard the news that as of Jan. 1, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis and Jewish Family Service of St. Paul are now operating as one – Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minnesota (JFCS)! This new chapter gives us the chance to grow our impact and engage more people in meaningful ways, while staying rooted in the relationships and values that have always guided our work. We’re especially excited to welcome 300 volunteers from JFS to our community – there are so many ways for you to get involved, connect with others, and make a difference alongside our now 1,200+ volunteers.

The start of the year often invites some reflection – especially during a challenging season. Jewish tradition reminds us that community is both our strength and our responsibility, and I see that every day in the care, commitment, and hope our volunteers bring to JFCS and to one another. Thank you for all that you do! And if things are feeling heavy right now, please know that you are not alone in this – we’re here for you and you’re welcome to reach out anytime.

Volunteering lies at the core of our mission – whether through organized programs or small acts of kindness, we hope you know the impact you are making in other people’s lives, and that volunteering brings purpose and meaning to your own life. Last week, JFCS was closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Guided by Dr. King’s vision and the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world). JFCS staff participated in several service projects as part of MLK Day of Service.

Check out these resources to learn more about MLK Jr. Day of Service and how you and your family can get involved in a cause that is meaningful to you.

So many people are looking to get involved in volunteer opportunities to help others in the community during this time. There are a variety of ways for you to engage both here and outside of JFCS. We could use a little extra help while many of our “snowbird” volunteers are away with driving for Garber Transportation and providing 1:1 companionship and other support to older adults. Hag Sameach Passover is also right around the corner (more info below). TC Jewfolk is maintaining an ongoing, updated list of community needs and synagogue-based support efforts during this time. And if you’re spending the winter elsewhere, you’re still very much part of our community. Feel free to check out partner agencies across the country if you want to get involved while you’re away. We can’t wait to welcome you back when you return.

As always, I’m here to support you in your volunteer journey at JFCS, so please reach out to connect anytime!
